It’s time to deal with loan defaulters sternly, says Supreme Court

Concerned over increasing number of corporate houses and private institutions not paying back loans taken from banks and public bodies, the Supreme Court said on Monday that the defaulters must be sternly dealt with and strict action taken against them. "The increase of non-performing assets in banks is one of the offshoots of such murky deals. It is shocking that despite having means, earning profits, they are not interested in making payment. Time has come when they have to be dealt with sternly and with an iron hand so as to make them pay public dues," a bench of Justices Arun Mishra and S Abdul Nazeer said. The apex court slammed Maharaji Educational Trust, which runs several medical colleges, dental college and hospitals, for not repaying Rs 480 crore to Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO). The trust, allegedly possessing properties worth of Rs 1,200 crore, had taken a loan of Rs 75 crore in 1995 but it had swelled to Rs 480 crore with interest. The trust failed to refund the amount in the last 22 years.

Stents sold in Europe for less than Indian prices

Multinational stent companies claim that the ceiling price fixed by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) is commercially unviable, but they are selling at far lower prices in much richer countries with smaller markets than India such as Germany, the UK, Italy and many other European countries. A look at the prices of stent brands in these countries shows that people in India have been defrauded of crores of rupees over years in the absence of any price control or law. Before price control, patients in India paid among the highest prices for stents globally even higher than in the US. In the US, the price of a drug eluting stent (DES) ranges from Rs 62,000 ($950) to Rs 78,000 ($1,200). In India, hospitals were charging almost double with DES prices typically ranging from Rs 65,000 to Rs 1.7 lakh. In the case of the bioabsorbable stents, which have come under a cloud for their safety and efficacy, the US paid about $100 to $200 (Rs 6,500 to Rs 13,000) over the price of the most expensive DES, or roughly $1,200 to $1,500. In India, patients were charged Rs 1.9 lakh (over $2,900) for Abbot's bioabsorbable stent.

The third red flag I want to raise on this third anniversary is that there are no signs yet of the economic boom that people like me believed would happen as soon as Modi became Prime Minister. Candidate Modi had mocked at poverty redistribution schemes like MNREGA and said clearly that India should work for prosperity and not just hope to alleviate poverty. But, somewhere along the way he seems to have changed his mind and become a Nehruvian socialist. He appears to have decided that there is no harm in the Government of India hanging onto its public sector companies despite them being bottomless pits. So although the Government of India could become flush with funds by selling off useless airlines and hotels, this has not happened. Nor has there been any attempt at making commercial use of the enormous tracts of urban land that the Ministries of Defence and Railways sit on. We have so far seen no signs either of the government cutting spending on itself by reducing the size of its offices and reducing the privileges of its officers. The result is that an atmosphere of stale socialism continues to permeate huge sections of the economy. And with the hunt for black money having been speeded up, some of the most corrupt officials in India now have more power than ever before.

A storm has erupted in China over its hyper-competitive education system, after oversubscribed private schools in Shanghai sought to filter intake by conducting tests and checks not only on prospective pupils but also parents and grandparents.

Bewildered parents took to social media last week after being forced to take IQ tests before interviews at two Shanghai primary schools. They were also asked to complete questionnaires detailing their own educational and professional credentials, as well as those of the students’ grandparents.
